Helmet Return
Posted by: Andy on Tuesday, 13th July, 2004They split five years ago but Helmet are back with a new album and a new line-up, transforming the group into a hard rock supergroup, with members of Anthrax and White Zombie.
In the band’s hiatus, frontman Page Hamilton has been busy; he toured with David Bowie in support of the singers Hours album, has worked as a session musician on film soundtracks and produced solo material by Gavin Rossdale. In 2002 he formed a new band, Ghandi, but became disillusioned with the direction he was taking. The solution was simple; he decided to break up Ghandi and reform Helmet.
“I never felt it was musically done,” Hamilton told Billboard.com. “I always felt I had more Helmet records to write.”
Unfortunately for him, the rest of the band were not so enthusiastic. Bassist Henry Bogdan now lives a quiet life in Hawaii, while drummer John Stanier can be found performing with Tomahawk and Battles.
“I don’t see why I should stop doing it because John and Henry don’t want to, when both of them were presented with the option,” says Hamilton. “Unfortunately, we have no relationship personally anymore. That’s not my choice.”
Despite this setback, Hamilton continued with his plan, recruiting Chris Traynor (who played guitar on the last Helmet tour) to play bass and ex-White Zombie drummer John Tempesta. Subsequent to the recording of the band’s new album, Size Matters, Traynor switched to guitar to make way for ex-Anthrax bassist Frank Bello. Several of the new tracks are also co-written with Nine Inch Nails man Charlie Clouser.
Size Matters is set for release on 14th September, with a world tour commencing the following week.
The tracklist for the new album is as follows:
Smart
Crashing Foreign Cars
See You Dead
Drug Lord
Enemies
Unwound
Everybody Loves You
Surgery
Speak and Spell
Throwing Punches
Last Breath
