Libertine Faces Jail
Posted by: Andy on Wednesday, 18th August, 2004Pete Doherty of The Libertines and Babyshambles was warned yesterday at Thames Magistrates Court in London that he faces a possible jail sentence after pleading guilty to charges of carrying an offensive weapon.
Doherty will find out early next month what his sentence will be, which could pose problems for the planned Babyshambles tour in September. However, The Libertines (who are currently moving ahead without Doherty) will be holding a series of playback evenings for their new album later this month.
At Doherty’s trial, the court heard that the alleged incident occurred on 18th June this year when he was stopped by the police who, upon searching him, found a flick knife with four inch blade in his pocket.
The defence told the court that Doherty had only been in the country for twelve hours after returning from overseas, where he had purchased the knife for a friend.
Sentencing will take place on 1st September and a jail sentence has not been ruled out. Speaking outside court, Doherty said, “If the law was to send me to prison it wouldn’t be able to look itself in the eye.”
This would be his second stretch inside, after spending time in prison on drug charges last year.
