Fischerspooner - Odyssey

Fischerspooner’s debut album #1 was the most talked about album of 2002. The duo found themselves lauded and slated at the same time, often in the same magazine and maybe even in the same article. When their speedy return was not forthcoming it seemed that the critics had been right and this was simply a cynical art project.

The real reason for the band’s disappearance was more obvious - when you make an album that is hyped to the point of ridiculousness, you either make the same album again or you start again from scratch. Fischerspooner chose the latter, aiming to improve on their debut, making music that was more expressive and emotional with a richer, warmer sound to contrast the sterile electronics. It may have taken nearly three years and pushed them to their mental limits but they managed it.

Warren Fischer pulled a group of session musicians together to form a band and with them created around thirty instrumental tracks that took his distinctive electronics to a new level. At the same time, Casey Spooner set about working on his lyrics, enlisting the help of songwriter (and former member of 4 Non Blondes) Linda Perry on Happy, A Kick In The Teeth and All We Are and the author and intellectual Susan Sontag, who penned the lyrics for We Need A War.

To bring the final version of the album together Fischerspooner hired the French producer Mirwais to add his own touch to their creation.

All this work has paid off completely and proved that Fischerspooner are no flash in the pan. Odyssey is a great album and tracks like the singles Just Let Go and Never Win and A Kick In The Teeth, Everything To Gain, Happy, All We Are and a great cover of The Boredoms’ Circle show a band moving in a very interesting direction.

May this mark the beginning of a long career.
