Paris Hilton Gets The Banksy Treatment
Posted by: Andy on Monday, 4th September, 2006Five hundred copies of Paris Hilton’s debut album have found their way onto record store shelves after being doctored by controversial artist Banksy, a spokeswoman has told the BBC.
The CDs turned up in 48 independent record shops and branches of HMV and Virgin Megastore around the UK. The CD contains remixes by (producer and one half of Gnarls Barkley) Danger Mouse, with titles including What Am I For?, Why Am I Famous? and What Have I Done? while the artwork has been changed to feature Paris Hilton topless on the cover and slogans such as “Every time someone asks me how I am I hestitate a little bit too long” and “Every CD you buy puts me even further out of your league.”
A spokesman for HMV confirmed that seven copies of the CD had been discovered in two Brighton shops but no other locations were known to be affected. He added that no one had complained or returned their CD either. “I have to take my hat off - it’s a very good stunt,” he concluded.
Those who have managed to purchase a copy of the CD may not have got what they were expecting but they have found themselves a collectable item worth considerably more than a normal copy of Miss Hilton’s album (in more ways than one). At the time of writing one copy is already on eBay.
Banksy is well known for his elaborate stencil graffiti, as well as stunts including sneaking doctored versions of famous works of art into galleries and painting the wall that separates Israel and Palestine.
Danger Mouse is himself no stranger to musical controversy, being the man behind the infamous Grey Album, which mixed together Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album. Speaking to reporters this week he said, “It’s hard to improve on perfection, but we had to try”
