The Pigeon Detectives - Romantic Type

Posted by: Daisy on Tuesday, 27th February, 2007

They’re tipped as one of the hottest bands for 2007, but I recall them floating about at the beginning of last year… Anyway, whether they’re new old or new new is fairly irrelevant. The Pigeon Detectives may have a weird name that they’re stuck with, but their music outstrips such misfortune. They’ve got better in the time I’ve been listening to them, I have no doubts they are destined for wide acclaim.

Romantic Type is tight, mature and the epitome of bouncy, jangly guitar rock, with their “Noo Yorkshire” (get me, I know it all) charm oozing from my speakers. Matt Bowman’s vocals wail with a Yorkshire twang that is so delightful and infectious. The spirited, thundering drums draw it all in and build it into a really uplifting song that I’m happy to listen to over and over again, so that I can tell you how good it is. Today is one of the first really nice days of the year – the sun is shining and the sky is a beautiful blue only occasionally dotted with clouds, and I kind of wish I was outside in the park with my friends listening to Romantic Type instead of sitting at my computer screen.

There are a lot of bands like them, but who just don’t make the grade. The Pigeon Detectives have something about them that I can’t quite place. Although, maybe it’s that they seem to lack any indie snobbery and arrogance that they could easily hold instead they are taking all their notoriety in their stride – and with love from Radio 1 and MTV, that’s quite impressive.

They’re currently on tour, so have a shufty at their website to see if they’re playing anywhere near you; hurry though, word on the street (no really, I am down with the kids) is that tickets are selling like hot cakes.
