Mash ups. You’ve got a hard drive full of them, right? They’re not exactly a new idea. In its defence, this album is so late on the scene because it’s been in production for two years, so that it can proclaim itself “the FIRST fully legal mash up album of its type”.

Now, forgive me if you disagree, but I always felt that part of the attraction was that these things weren’t legal. Proclaiming it “fully legal” takes some of the excitement away. Still, what convinced me to listen to listen to Mashed is that it’s compiled (and features eight tracks by) Mark Vidler, AKA Go Home Productions, the man responsible for many of the best spliced tracks out there.

That interest flagged again when I saw what tracks had been chosen. Aside from the excellent Passenger Fever (Peggy Lee vs Iggy Pop), these are not Vidler’s best. What about Return Of The Weather Episode (Snoop Dogg vs Crowded House), or Sexual High (Marvin Gaye vs Radiohead); tracks where the unlikely but perfect combination of mismatched parts gives you a track that somehow works better than either original.

For that matter, where are all the other mash-up artists? Most of the non-GHP tracks are established artists in their own right. This album is dull and doesn’t have any of the variety you can get on countless mixes all over the internet. Mark Vidler, you disappoint me.
