Martin Grech - The Heritage

Martin Grech is something of a musical chameleon. His debut album spanned everything from Opera to indie, while on his 2005 follow-up, Unholy he blasted fans with harsh, dark metal (making some of the ex-fans). Now that’s out of his system, his third offering, March Of The Lonely is made up of soft, sweet and beautiful folk.

After splitting with Island Records, Grech fled to the remote Osea Island, just off the Essex coast, a place where I can’t image being able to write anything but folk music. Though his original plan was to record an album of folk covers, some of his own songs began to take on a new life during his stay on Osea, forming what was to become March Of The Lonely.

This single features two of those songs, The Heritage and Ashes Over Embers. The former is a slow-building funeral march, while the later is altogether softer, almost a capella. If the rest of the album lives up to this promise, we could have a classic on our hands. I can’t wait to find out.
