Pepe Deluxe - Pussy Cat Rock

Posted by: Daisy on Friday, 6th April, 2007

The cover of this CD looks a little bit like a GCSE graphic design project, which made me a little concerned, but Pussy Cat Rock was nothing like what I had expected.

Initially I had the crap scared out of me by the wailing cats which open the track, because my speakers were up much louder than I had realised. Once the music kicks in though, it could be mistaken as the theme tune for some dodgy 70’s super hero/cop show.

Pussy Cat Rock is a lively cross of the psychedelic 60’s and a bit of 70’s jangly guitar pop. It’s quite random, I have to say, and I can’t decide if I like it or not. It pulls no punches and is certainly, musically, a strong and tight track. But I can’t help but feel it’s not the kind of song anyone could listen to with any sense of seriousness!

The more I hear it the more I feel compelled to start doing a little hand jive along to it, which is always entertaining. I can’t envisage the kids bopping around the dance floor to this, but perhaps if anyone makes a TV show about a crime fighting cat then they’ve got their theme tune sorted…!
