Loney, Dear - Loney, Noir
Posted by: Andy on Monday, 23rd April, 2007Recording on an incredibly basic set-up in his Stockholm apartment, Emil Svanängen has been putting out albums since 2003 at an incredible rate and, until recently, without a label.
Loney, Noir was one of two self-released Loney, Dear albums put out in 2005 and as word of mouth has gradually whispered its way around the music industry, it has been picked up by Regal for a UK release (following on from the other 2005 album, Sologne, which came out on Something In Construction last year).
Despite the minimalism of his recording equipment, Svanängen creates a rich and full sound. A talented player of a wide variety of instruments, his soft pop songs reach room-filling proportions without losing their intimate feel.
Recent single I Am John follows this blueprint perfectly, opening like any other Swedish folk song before building up with crashing drums, squelching synths, clarinet, layered harmonies and Svanängen’s high-pitched, nasal but strangely enticing voice licking around your ears.
