The Young Gods - Super Ready / Fragmenté

For the most part, Switzerland is happy to sit, quietly landlocked in central Europe. This is not enough for everyone, though. In 1985, The Young Gods formed in Geneva and began experimenting with samplers and guitars, creating a sound that would influence many of today’s stars, including Trent Reznor, Ministry, The Chemical Brothers, Mike Patton, Tool and U2.

Having continued to quietly release albums through French label Intoxygene, the trio have teamed up with their original UK home, PIAS (and Mike Patton’s Ipecac label in the US) to release Super Ready / Fragmenté and acquaint a whole new generation of music fans with their music.

Leaving no space for pleasantries, Super Ready / Fragmenté kicks in straight away with twitching rock tracks, I’m The Drug and Freeze before truly setting the album’s true mood on C’est Quoi C’est Ça, a slow, threatening track with buzzing guitars distorted to oblivion and synth noises bouncing off the parameter.

I’m loathe to call this a comeback album because The Young Gods have never stopped doing what they do; it’s us who went away. Nor is this an album for old fans to get nostalgic over (though I’m sure they will). Super Ready / Fragmenté is just a great album of electronic rock music. It stands up against anything else today and takes a step away as something different at the same time. If you’ve never heard The Young Gods before, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
