Ray LaMontagne - Till The Sky Turns Black
Posted by: Andy on Monday, 18th June, 2007After the phenomenal success of his debut album, Trouble, which was released in the UK last year, Ray LaMontagne is back again. This second collection of soulful folk songs will not disappoint his many fans and is sure to bring in many more.
Till The Sun Turns Black makes more use of orchestral instruments than Trouble, but the central focus is still LaMontagne’s voice and guitar; for the most part everything else is simply atmospheric and tries hard not to get in the way. Songs like Three More Days and You Can Bring Me Flowers let the other instruments get closer and both make great use of brass.
These more R&B-influenced songs provide a broader canvas for LaMontagne to paint on but he gets a little too close to John Martyn’s style, particularly on Three More Days, which snaps you out of the world the rest of the songs create for you.
