The Icarus Line - Black Lives At The Golden Coast

Posted by: Andy on Tuesday, 19th June, 2007

It’s probably fair to say that The Icarus Line are better known for their rock n roll antics than their music, despite the good work of their fervent fanbase. Unlike many fast living bands, it’s almost impossible to read a story about The Icarus Line’s drink and drug fuelled behaviour without an accompanying plug for one or more of their albums.

With their long-awaited third album, The Icarus Line have moved almost entirely away from the punishing punk rock that originally soundtracked their lives in favour of something altogether more eclectic and interesting. Influences welcomed into the fold on Black Lives At The Golden Coast include anything from Dinosaur Jr and Monster Magnet to Echo & The Bunnymen and Joy Division.

This is not just a shift in sound (the shift began on the previous album, Pennance Soiree, after all). It feels more like The Icarus Line have suddenly rediscovered themselves as musicians and they’re really loving their day job.
