Sum 41 - Underclass Hero

Posted by: Andy on Thursday, 2nd August, 2007

One of the few major label punk bands with anything of worth to say (which is probably why Fall Out Boy sell so many more records than they do), Sum 41 return with their fourth album.

After their previous, harder-edged album Chuck, this time around the band have swung right back the other way with their most commercial-sounding album yet. It seems that for the last two years the band have been enrolled in the Avril Lavigne School Of Punk Rock.

So, the music may have softened, but the angry political stance picked up on the last album has only grown stronger, no more so than on March Of The Dogs, which a revolution culminating in the violent death of the President, and The Jester, probably the angriest song to ever include a round of chirpy la la las.

In the end it’s hard to tell if the decision to go for such a pop sound was commercial or political. It’s just exciting to find such passion in something aimed at a mass market.
